Election day, in four keys
Before saying goodbye, we review the day with the highlights of the first round of these presidential and parliamentary elections:
—The candidates Jeannette Jara, from the left, and José Antonio Kast, of the extreme right, will face each other in the second round after obtaining the highest number of votes in this Sunday’s elections. The former Minister of Labor won 26.81% of the votes, while the ultra-conservative won 23.99%;
—The big surprise has been the populist Franco Parisi, leader of the People’s Party, which, like in the 2021 election, came in third place, with almost 20% of the support. Now, their electorate will be key for the La Moneda candidates who will compete on December 14. However, Parisi has not given his support to any of the candidates who will compete in the second round. Instead, he has asked them to “earn the votes.”
—Evelyn Matthei, of the traditional right, it has been in fifth place; and the libertarian Johannes Kaiser in fourth position. Both have announced their support for Kast’s candidacy;
—The results of the parliamentary elections are still in the scrutiny phase, although preliminary data suggest that the right is consolidating its advantage in the Senate and that the extreme right is strengthening in the Chamber of Deputies.
