The Artemis 2 astronauts break a first historical record: they are the humans who have been the furthest in orbit around the Earth
No one has been as far from Earth as the crew of Artemis 2 are now since the Apollo lunar missions concluded in 1972. From then on, all astronauts who have traveled to space had stayed in low Earth orbit, usually not traveling more than a few hundred kilometers.
The four from Artemis 2 are now tens of thousands of kilometers away, in high Earth orbit. They have already broken the historical record of being the humans who have orbited the Earth the furthest. They will set the new record at almost 70,400 kilometers. The previous record was held, since 2024, by the crew of the Polaris Dawn, a private mission flown by the current NASA administrator, Jared Isaacman.
