The Colombian Prosecutor’s Office announced Wednesday that the 15 -year -old hitman who murdered the senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay has been sanctioned with seven years of seclusion in a specialized center for minors. In a statement, the entity explains that, seven days before the right -wing politician died from that attack, “the young man accepted the crimes of attempted homicide and manufacturing, traffic, carrying or possession of firearms.” The minor shot him on June 7 in the middle of a political rally in a park in the West of Bogotá, in what would become the first murder of a presidential candidate in the country after more than three decades.
According to the authorities, the young man was contacted by an illegal structure to serve as his hitman. “It was summoned in the Modelia neighborhood (where the park in which the attack occurred) is already boarding a car driven by Carlos Eduardo Mora González, he received a 9mm Glock gun.” Although the minor tried to flee after firing at the head of Uribe Turbay, he received a bullet impact on one leg and was arrested a few blocks from the place. The congressman of the Opposition Democratic Center remained hospitalized and in critical condition, until he died on August 11.
The investigation for the murder, which the Prosecutor’s Office has described as assassination, indicated so far to six responsible materials: the 15 -year -old hitman, who reserves the name for being a minor; Carlos Eduardo Mora González, driver of the vehicle that facilitated the delivery of the weapon; Katerine Andrea Martínez Martínez, known as Andrea either Gabrielaaccused of transporting the gun; William Fernando González Cruz, who collected those involved after the attack; Elder José Arteaga Hernández, aka The coastalconsidered the main articulator of the network and link between the executors and who would have ordered the crime; and Cristian Camilo González Ardila, pointed out to be in charge of transferring the minor after the attack, but who allegedly gave up when he saw police presence. For now, the authorities have not indicated who would be behind the attack.
It has also been known that the weapon used, modified to shoot in burst, was legally acquired in the state of Arizona in 2020, but not how it arrived in Colombia. The Prosecutor’s Office and Police have recognized the importance of establishing intellectual authors, a void that has left room for varied speculation and hypotheses. President Gustavo Petro has indicated at different times the dissidents of the extinct Farc command of Iván Bite and also known as the second Marquetalia, the ELN guerrillas and an alleged “drug trafficking board” with operations in Dubai. Until now, the judicial authorities have not confirmed their main research thesis.
The investigations continue and the Executive has offered a reward of 3,000 million pesos for information that allows identifying the material authors of the crime. The Ministry of Defense has also requested support from the United States, the United Kingdom and Arab Emirates to track financial and migratory links of people linked to the crime that has shocked Colombia.
