The State Department has confirmed on Thursday the visit of the Secretary of State of the US Government, Marco Rubio, Mexico and Ecuador, from September 2 to 4. As only the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, Rubio, will meet Mexican authorities to, among other issues, sign a security agreement, in the midst of the Trump administration against the drug’s posters.
In a statement, the State Department said that this first official trip to the country, and its room as head of that institution, responds to its objective to promote “key priorities” of the United States: “They include rapid and decisive actions To dismantle the cartels, stop the traffic of fentanil, put an end to illegal immigration, reduce the commercial deficit, promote economic prosperity and counteract the extra -contractine malignant actors, ”they say.
With this trip, the Donald Trump government reaffirms the impulse to its international agenda, focused on the safety of your country and the “external threats” that it has identified and where it has put the sights: “The trip demonstrates the firm commitment of the United States to the protection of its borders, the neutralization of narcoterrorist threats to our territory and equal conditions for US companies.”
In the brief, they also make it clear that they expect a regional “distribution of responsibilities” and their intention that both in Mexico and Ecuador diplomatic relations are strengthened with this type of meetings.
Already last June, President Sheinbaum, and the Undersecretary of State, Christopher Landau, met in the National Palace in a meeting that was described by the president as “courtesy.” According to his statements, Landau presented his new position and assured that his government sought “the best relationship” with Mexico. In addition, the president said that her cabinet showed her advances in security, migration and defended the migrant community in the United States. This was a prelude that prepared the stage for the expected arrival of Rubio.
Since the second term of Trump began, the United States and Mexico have starred in their public relations and communications, marked by commercial disagreements and negotiations – in front of the tariffs imposed by Trump – as well as statements around the combat of drug trafficking groups, the trials of Mexican drug traffickers in US cuts, and migratory issues that have monopolized the agenda of both nations.
This is Rubio’s fourth visit in the front of his country’s diplomacy, after his visits, at the beginning of the year and during the month of March, Central America and the Caribbean. Since the Republican was campaigning, he made clear his intention to strengthen and monitor his government’s relations with Latin America and strengthen his main objectives in the region.
