Meloni says that the flotilla did not benefit the Palestinians and will create problems to Italians
The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, said Thursday that the mission of the Global Sumud Flotilla was not going to benefit the Palestinians and that will carry many difficulties to the Italians, in media statements before entering the summit of the European political community in Copenhagen.
On the intervention of the Israeli army, which is intercepting the ships that were part of the flotilla while they were heading to Gaza and stopping the crews, the ultra -right -wing president said that the contacts have already been activated since last night with the lawyers of some of the people on board and that “obviously everything possible will be done to ensure that these people can return to Italy as soon as possible”.
“Despite this, I still believe that all this does not benefit the Palestinian people. On the other hand, I understand that it will bring many difficulties to the Italian people,” he said. He stressed that “yesterday the Palestinians thanked the work they do” such as “opening a corridor for researchers” and that Italy is “the nation, the non -Islamic nation, that more people have evacuated to be treated in our hospitals, and we are one of the world’s leading nations in the delivery of help.”
According to Meloni, the initiatives such as those of the flotilla, “have little to do with the Palestinian issue and much with Italian affairs” and in this regard cited the convocation by the CGIL and USB unions of a strike in all sectors for tomorrow to protest Israeli intervention. “A strike on Friday for a long weekend and the revolution does not agree,” he ironized.
He also regretted that the opposition did not want to vote a motion to support the Plan for Gaza of US President Donald Trump. “So, let’s say, only the Italian left remains, which obviously maintains more radical positions.”
At the moment, there are 22 Italians, including several deputies, have been arrested by Israel in the framework of the operation and “are all good,” said Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. (EFE)
