At least 29 people have died, including at least eight children, and several are still missing after a tourist ship in which 53 people were traveling in Halong Bay, one of Vietnam’s most popular destinations.
According to the Vietnam news agency, 10 people have been rescued so far and search work to find other passengers who continue missing will continue throughout the night.
The accident occurred early on Saturday afternoon, when a ship in which 48 Vietnamese tourists and five crew members were traveling and ran into a sudden storm and ended up anxiety.
According to the information provided by the government media, rescue services have recovered so far 28 bodies in Ha Long and another person was declared dead when he arrived at the hospital.
In addition, four bodies have been found closer to the Ti Top Islands and Tuan Chau, near the scene of the accident, although at the moment it has not been possible to confirm their identities or if they were passengers in the injured ship.
The injured have been transferred to a nearby hospital, where they are being treated. According to the Vietnam news agency, they are stable and in continuous observation.
The viceprimer minister of the country, Tran Hong Ha, moved to the scene, from where he sent his condolences to the families of the deceased and described the incident as “an unfortunate and unforeseen accident.”
He also asked that search work intensifies during the night to locate the possible survivors as soon as possible and recover the remaining victims, although they are being hindered by the bad weather conditions in the area. “The search must be completed tonight. Prepare to get the ship afloat as soon as possible, expand the search area and deploy professional divers,” says the Vietnamese agency.
