An ambush has left a balance of at least six dead community police and a handful of injured in the Union of Peoples and Organizations (UPOEG). According to local media, the attack occurred in the municipality of Ayutla, Guerrero, midnight this Saturday, about 139 kilometers from Acapulco. The state authorities have not yet ruled on the incident, however, the municipality regretted the death of its police through their social networks. “The honorable house of the villages of Ayutla de los Libres deeply regrets the sensitive death of the fallen community police yesterday. We join the penalty that seizes their relatives, friendships and the entire community, recognizing their delivery and service in favor of the security and well -being of the people,” says the message.
Ministerial sources, cited by state media, confirmed that the bodies were laid on the dirt road. The community wearing firearms – rifles and shotguns – at the time of aggression. The attack has as a backdrop the struggle of several criminal groups, such as the Ardillos and the Russians, in the Costa Chica region, an area of difficult access.
The origins of the UPOEG date back to 2013. This organization was one of the first police of civilians raised in arms against criminals, who since those times have ravaged the state of Guerrero. Despite being the first community defense cells, attacks with other groups, as well as corruption signs declined their presence in recent dates, shows this was the shotgun murder of its historical leader, Bruno Plácido, in October 2023. Months later, in July 2024, another attack against UPOEG police officers in the municipality of Juan R. Escudero was reported, which left at least six dead.
As in other locations, community police in Guerrero have proliferated in the face of the low security of State forces. Called themselves as self -defense groups, most of these police officers are made up of citizens who armed themselves against the crime of their region and have a strong cultural and traditional adhesion with their municipalities.
