The head of government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, announced on Wednesday the arrest of 13 people, related to the murder of their collaborators Ximena Guzmán and José Muñoz, in May. Of the 13, Brugada said, three would have participated directly in the attack, perpetrated in the Tlalpan road, in broad daylight, in a central area of the capital. The president has reported that the security cabinet will give more details this Wednesday afternoon.
The murder of Guzmán and Muñoz hit the city and its ruling class. Guzmán was Brugada’s private secretary, and Muñoz one of his main advisors. The three had worked together for years, but neither Guzmán nor Muñoz handled a high profile. They lived away from the press and political controversies, installed in the technical aspect of governance, solving, advising the government team.
Hence the uncertainty generated by the case. When criminals linked to the Jalisco New Generation cartel attempted 2020 against the then police chief of the capital, Omar García Harfuch, the discomfort was different. Harfuch had been part of the Attorney General’s Office and before the Federal Police. He had worked on violent contexts in Guerrero or Michoacán, even in the same capital, with important arrests of local criminal groups. It is not that the attack was inevitable, but it missed much less than the case of Guzmán and Muñoz.
In addition to unexpected, this last attack surprised by the tranquility of the attackers, who intercepted the officials in Tlalpan, on a Tuesday morning, at a stop of the vehicle in which both were traveling. Wearing a motorcycle helmet, the murderer approached the Guzmán vehicle and shot at them. The two lost their lives on the street. In the first weeks, the authorities identified at least four people, linked to the attack. But today are the first arrests.
