Uruguayan Diego Forlán fractured three ribs yesterday playing a soccer match in his country’s University Sports League, where he defends the Old Boys club in the over-40 category. According to the local press, Forlán was injured in the classic between said team and Old Christians, which ended with a 4-1 victory for the team in which he has played since 2022 who was chosen as the best player at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Likewise, he detailed that Forlán also suffered a “small pneumothorax” and will be admitted to the hospital until Tuesday, October 21.
Born in Montevideo in 1979, the former professional soccer player retired from playing in August 2019. Forlán had an extensive and award-winning career that included great teams such as the Argentine Independiente, Atlético de Madrid and Villarreal, the English Manchester United and the Uruguayan Peñarol. Winner of individual titles such as top scorer in the Spanish League in the 2008-2009 season, the UEFA Golden Boot and the EFE Trophy in 2005, the Uruguayan left a legacy for local and South American football.
After his retirement, Old Boys & Old Girls Club welcomed Forlán in 2022, who thus returned to playing football. Likewise, last year, Forlán played his first professional tennis match during his participation in the Montevideo Challenger.
Drenthe, former Madrid player, hospitalized with a stroke
Former Real Madrid player Royston Drenthe, a 38-year-old Dutchman, has been hospitalized since Friday after suffering a stroke. The news was announced by FC de Rebellen, an agency that represents former soccer players. Drenthe, an international for his country, began his career with Feyenoord before joining Real Madrid in 2007, winning the League title a year later.
