Texas is also militarized before protests against Donald Trump and their deportation policy. The second most populated state in the United States, with 40% of the Latin population, is preparing to celebrate this weekend mass marches in the streets of its main cities. The Republican governor, Greg Abbott, has therefore mobilized 5,000 elements of the National Guard. This military force will join the State Police to strengthen security during the demonstrations that coincide with the parade that the Republican President organized for his birthday, which coincides with the anniversary of the Army.
Abbott, a hard -line governor in the fight against irregular immigration, has said that the decision intends to “ensure order and peace.” The maneuver, however, cannot be detached from what happens on the other side of the country, in Los Angeles, a city with a large Hispanic presence that has been disturbing days for the raids that the Immigration Control Service (ICE) is carrying out in the community.
The Trump administration sent 4,000 national guards and 700 marine infants to the streets of California in response to mobilizations. He did it without requested by the Governor of the State, the Democrat Gavin Newsom, who filed a lawsuit before the Courts to stop what he calls a militarization that tramples state sovereignty. This has opened a new pulse between the Federation and California, which has started more than 20 litigation against Washington in Trump’s second presidency.
“We will use all the tools and strategies in our hands to help security forces conserve order,” said Abbott, who warned that anyone who damages public or private properties will be arrested and processed by vandalism. Los Angeles Police have arrested 385 people in protests since Saturday. Only more than 200 arrests were made on Monday, although charges were not presented in all cases.
The governor had advanced the decision on Tuesday, when he announced the deployment of military guards before a demonstration in San Antonio. The soldiers could be seen in the streets of the city on Wednesday night in a peaceful protest that was made close to El Alamo, an emblematic combat scenario in the war between Mexico and Texas in the nineteenth century. The protest, to which hundreds of people attended, passed in order without registering acts of violence.
Abbott has not released this Thursday where the troops will be deployed. However, hundreds of mobilizations have been summoned for this Saturday as part of No Kingsan event organized nationwide in response to the Trump parade in Washington. About 30 will be held throughout the Texan geography. The call will continue several days of social discomfort caused by the raids, which have left 330 people arrested only in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Region.
An organization in favor of the rights of undocumented people has summoned a demonstration on Friday in Houston. A day later, hundreds of protesters will take to the streets of the largest cities in Texas such as Houston, Dallas and Austin, the capital of the Republican entity. In the last two cities, this week has registered clashes between attendees to local protests and police, who have launched irritating gases to disperse the groups. There were also a handful of arrests.
