The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) forecasts rain this Friday in the center of the Peninsula, especially in the south of Castilla y León, the north of Extremadura, the north of Castilla-La Mancha and the Community of Madrid. According to the forecasts, there will be a predominance of cloudy or overcast skies in most of the territory, and sun in the southern third of the peninsula. The effects of the storm continue Benjaminwhich during this week has had a special impact in the north. Temperatures will be lower in the Ebro and the Mediterranean area and higher in much of the rest of the territory. The Aemet spokesperson, Rubén del Campo, has announced that “the weekend will be rainy, which between Saturday and Sunday will end up affecting most of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands and the temperatures will drop, although on Saturday they will still be high for these dates in the south.”
The agency does not foresee significant phenomena, after having activated meteorological alerts in 14 autonomous communities this Thursday. Del Campo explained that “the Peninsula is under the influence of humid winds coming from the Atlantic”, which will generate rain in the center and weaker and occasional rainfall in the northwest of the peninsula and areas of the Cantabrian Sea during this day. They could also occasionally fall in the northeastern third, the eastern facade and the Balearic Islands. In the Canary Islands, the next few days will have cloudy intervals with some light rain and temperatures without major changes.
Maximum temperatures will rise in Andalusia, in the interior southeast of the peninsula, in the Northern plateau and Galicia and will fall in the rest of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. “Huelva, Córdoba or Seville will continue to exceed 30 degrees, and there will be a cooler atmosphere in the north where Lugo, for example, will remain at 15 degrees,” explains Del Campo. The minimum temperatures will decrease throughout the country, with the exception of the southeast of Andalusia. Few changes are expected in the Canary Islands, except for slight decreases in minimum temperatures in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Scattered weak frosts are expected in the Pyrenees and isolated in the mountains of the extreme north.
Light winds from the south and west will predominate on the Peninsula. Moderate winds with strong intervals at the beginning are expected in the Cantabrian Sea and Ampurdán, where the Tramuntana will blow. There will also be moderate intervals on both plateaus and other coastlines of the northern Mediterranean. Winds will blow with light or moderate intensity on the islands, from the west to the south in the Balearic Islands, and from the north in the Canary Islands.
On Saturday, abundant humidity will continue to arrive on the Peninsula and there will be rain in a good part of the west, center and north of the territory, according to the Aemet. The most abundant rainfall will occur in the south, east and north of Castilla y León and also in the north of Extremadura, where more than 40 liters per square meter could accumulate in less than 12 hours. The spokesperson clarifies that: “The south and the Levante area and also the Balearic Islands will be left out of the rains this day.” And he adds: “There will be a marked contrast in temperatures between the north and south of the peninsula, with maximums of 15 degrees in Huesca, Burgos or Logroño and more than 30 degrees in Murcia, Córdoba or Seville.”
On Sunday the instability will extend to the east of the peninsular territory and the Balearic Islands, so there will be a probability of rain in most of the country, except in Galicia and the province of León, according to Del Campo. These rains will be locally strong in parts of Catalonia, around the Balearic Sea, and in parts of eastern Andalusia. During the day temperatures will drop in much of the country, except in the Ebro depression, where they will rise. It will snow in the Pyrenees from about 1400 to 1800 m altitude. There will be a cool atmosphere in the northwest where, for example, the maximum expected on Sunday for León will be only 13 degrees and there will already be values more typical of the time of year than in the previous days in the south, although Murcia will still continue to be around 28 degrees.
