National Assembly discusses the Amnesty Law
Chavismo tries to gain the support of the opposition to approve the norm unanimously
The National Assembly of Venezuela debates in Caracas this Thursday an amnesty law with which hundreds of political prisoners could be released from prisons. Chavismo’s intention is to approve the norm unanimously, after two weeks of consultations with various political sectors and civil society.
In parallel with the negotiations, dozens of prisoners’ relatives have held protest vigils in front of prisons across the country. After the release of 444 people in the last month and a half, it is estimated that there are still at least 600 prisoners locked up for political reasons pending release.
