An 11-year-old boy, who arrived in Spain just a year ago from his native Bolivia to reunite with his mother and two brothers in the Granada town of Huétor Tájar, was run over this Sunday when he was walking along the acceleration lane leading onto the A92 highway in a service area. It was 6:40 when a vehicle that had just left Huétor Tájar towards Loja took that lane to join the highway. There was still an hour before dawn and, fatally, the driver ran over the minor. The emergency services that arrived shortly after could do nothing for his life.
The Civil Guard is investigating what a child of that age was doing, so early, even without sunlight, in that place so inhospitable for anyone and even more so for a minor, approximately three kilometers from the town. The acceleration lane where he was hit serves to exit a service area – Vega Poniente – and is also the natural access to the highway for those driving from Huétor Tájar in the direction of Loja, Antequera or Seville.
The mayor of the town, Fernando Delgado, explained that the deceased minor arrived in his town from Bolivia just a year ago. There he met his mother and two brothers, who had been living in Huétor Tájar for four years. The child was enrolled at the Padre Manjón Early Childhood and Primary School. According to the mayor, the family was dedicated to agricultural work. The closest explanation that the child was walking at that time is that, the mayor explained and always according to the family’s version, “the child walked a lot because he felt obese and wanted to lose weight.”
The councilor commented that the people were shocked and that the city council has made the necessary arrangements to take care of the funeral expenses, in addition to providing psychologists to assist the family. Delgado wanted to show all his support for the family, “logically destroyed and going through very difficult times.”
The Civil Guard has located and identified the driver of the accident, a native of Huétor Tájar and who waited at the scene of the incident for the arrival of the security forces, and has requested the images from the security cameras from those responsible for the service area.
