Indonesian authorities have found Matilde Muñoz dead, the Spanish woman disappeared in Indonesia for two months. Police have found their body on a beach in the town of Senggigi, on the island of Lombok, where it was housed since June, police sources have confirmed. Two men, aged 34 and 30, have been arrested for “premeditated homicide and robbery with violence,” the Indonesian police reported, through a statement collected by EFE, which ensures that both have confessed to having planned the murder.
The official communication of the body’s discovery to Matilde Muñoz’s family has occurred this Saturday at approximately three in the afternoon, as explained by the woman. The Embassy of Spain in Indonesia informs that it has confirmed with the authorities of the country the appearance of a body that could be that of Matilde Muñoz, and that they are in contact with the family to “provide all consular assistance.” The relatives of the woman, represented by her nephew, have been very critical of the investigation in the Asian country, and have denounced the “inefficiency, neglect and bad praxis” with which they consider that it has acted.
Muñoz, 72, was traveling a good part of the year through Asia. Born in Ferrol, retired and without children, her friends stopped knowing of her on July 1. He did not respond to messages, or through WhatsApp or social networks. His trail was lost on the island of Lombok, where he stayed at the Bumi Aditya hotel, which he paid until the 20th of that month. Police investigation now points to the two suspects entered through the hotel window where the woman was to steal. Muñoz, according to the first indications, was suffocated. His body has been found two months later on a beach near the hotel where he was.
The first complaint for his disappearance in Spain was put by one of the women in his group of friends, Olga Marín, at the Sant Feliu police station in Guíxols (Girona). Three days later, his nephew, Ignacio Vilariño, also denounced in Alcalá de Henares (Madrid). The Mossos d’Esquadra opened an investigation to carry out the efforts that were possible from Spain, and also support their relatives in Spain.
Muñoz had been traveling through Asia for years, and used perfectly alone, as her friends explain. Flight hostess already withdrawal, yoga and English teacher, usually resided in Mallorca. To cover all his expenses, he rented his house on the island, and so he could travel. The rest of the groups of friends were joining as their obligations allowed it in different countries of Asia.
On Friday night, Matilde’s nephew sent a very critical message to the media, in which he pointed out to the “Spanish authorities, the National Police, Interpol and all the responsible persons and public officials” for not giving “amparo to Matilde.” A Spanish citizen who had not received the necessary help abroad, insisted. And he added that Spain gave the “feeling of a failed country without resources, without diplomatic muscle” after two months of the “murder, not disappearance” of its aunt, without any Spanish authority having gone directly to the island. For all these reasons, they demanded the “necessary resources” to find “that wonder of a person who surely rests near the hotel, in a lodazal, under stones or in a landfill, without anyone moving a finger.”
