The National Agency against the Crime of the United Kingdom (NCA) has arrested this Wednesday a suspect of being involved in the cyber attack that affected the airports of Berlin, Brussels and Heathrow (London) last Friday. The man, in about 40 years, was arrested in West Sussex Count software From Collins Aerospace, used by all these airfields for flight billing, shipping and luggage management.
“This arrest is a positive step, but the investigation of the incident is still in its preliminary phases and continues its course,” said Paul Foster, the director of the Unit against Cyber Crimes of the NCA. The detainee has been released on bail after his arrest.
At the moment, the British authorities have not pointed out the motives of cyber attack or the concrete details of its execution.
Zaventem airport, in the Belgian capital, was the first to identify problems as a “cyber attack” against Collins Aerospace.
Since then there have been hundreds of flight delays in all these cities, while the problems created by the attack were corrected. The company relaunched its computer program on Monday, but since then tries to rebuild its operation on the march.
Airports like Heathrow have deployed extra staff to manually manage some of the procedures carried out by the program.
This Monday, the EU cybersecurity agency said that during the attack a ransomwarethe technical term with which it is called the crime of data kidnapping, which is usually accompanied by the demand for an economic rescue as a condition to restore the system.
“The vast majority of Heathrow flights already operate normally, but we encourage passengers to check the situation of their flight before going to the airport,” says the airport website.
The American company is one of the largest world suppliers of aerospace and defense products. RTX also controls Raytheon, defense contractors, and the Aerospace firm Pratt & Whitney. Last week it was announced that Collins Aerospace was going to supply software systems to combat electronic war for the NATO communication and information agency.
