On May 1, 2025, less than two weeks ago, 20 years of Lionel Messi’s first goal in his career was completed: it was against Albacete, at Camp Nou. Since then, the Argentine striker has signed 860 goals in 1,098 games. Over the years, Messi never wanted to be too categorical when choosing the best goal of his career. Sometimes, he highlighted his goal in front of Getafe in the Copa del Rey – which in which he emulated Maradona in Mexico; Other times he chose his header against Manchester United in the 2009 Champions League final, and has also praised his goal in the 2022 World Cup final against France. Now it will be himself who will end the debate: he will choose his favorite goal for a beneficial initiative that will link the world of sport with that of art.
Messi, the Inter Miami CF Foundation and the Refik Anadol artist are behind this campaign, which will begin when Argentina 10 reveals, on May 22 through its social networks, which considers its favorite goal among all those he has scored. Taking that goal as inspiration, Refik Anadol will create a work of art that will carry its signature and that of Messi, and that will be auctioned in Christie’s to raise funds for solidarity initiatives.
“Choosing only one goal among all is very complicated. Everyone has something special, and some are very important or bring me incredible memories. But highlight one as a favorite, for the first time, so that this unique project is possible, it is worth it. There is a very strong purpose behind, and it makes me very happy to be a part,” Messi said on Tuesday in a statement.
Among the solidarity projects that will benefit from this initiative is a collaboration between the Inter Miami CF and UNICEF Foundation, which seeks to favor access to quality educational programs in five countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
