Meloni celebrates that a “window” for peace in Ukraine after the Trump-Poutin summit is opened
The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, said this Saturday that “finally a window to discuss peace in Ukraine” opens, in her first reaction to the meeting held on Friday in Alaska between the president of the United States, Donald Trump, and her Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.
“Finally, a window opens to discuss peace in Ukraine. Italy is doing its part along with its western allies,” he wrote in his X account.
“The agreement remains complicated, but finally possible, especially after the stagnation that has occurred for many months on the front line,” he says in a statement released by his press office. In any case, it emphasizes that “only Ukraine can negotiate conditions and their territories.”
Meloni emphasizes that the “crucial point” remains that of security guarantees to avoid new Russian invasions, and pointed out that in that aspect there have been the “most interesting news” during the meeting in Anchorage among Russian and American leaders. “Only solid and credible guarantees in this regard can prevent new wars and aggressions,” he insists.
It also emphasizes that President Trump “has resumed the Italian idea” of establishing security guarantees inspired by article 5 of NATO, whose starting point is the definition of a “collective security clause” that allows Ukraine to benefit from the support of all its partners, including the United States, “willing to act in case it is attacked again.”
“European states remain united in their support for Ukraine in this negotiation phase. The path to peace is not easy, but it is important that Meloni concludes.
Meloni has participated this Saturday, together with other European leaders, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO general secretary, Mark Rutte, in a meeting by Videoconference with Trump and President Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, in which the American has informed them of what was treated with Putin.
