Costa summons several G-20 leaders, including Sánchez, to talk about the future of Ukraine
The president of the European Council, António Costa, called this Saturday 12 leaders of the G-20 countries, which are holding a summit in South Africa, to a meeting to discuss the future of Ukraine, according to official sources, after learning the details of the White House proposal to end the war.
“As you know, intense diplomatic efforts are being carried out around the peace plan for Ukraine, on the sidelines of the G-20 meeting,” the source said, adding that Costa today invited “like-minded leaders” present at the summit “to a meeting to discuss the way forward in Ukraine.” The invited countries are Spain, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Norway, Canada, Japan, Australia, Finland, Ireland and the Netherlands.
The meeting will take place this afternoon on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Johannesburg, where leaders will address the global challenges of trade, debt, development, geopolitics and the energy transition over the weekend.
Trump’s 28-point plan, leaked to US media, includes red lines for kyiv, such as the reduction of its Army to a maximum of 600,000 troops or the transfer to Russia of territories that have not been militarily conquered by Moscow.
Costa and the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, reiterated this Friday to the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, that any peace plan for this country must involve kyiv. Both European leaders also held a meeting on Friday with the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and this morning with the French President, Emmanuel Macron. (EFE)
