A subject of cap and white pole looks at the camera after having drawn a penis with aerosol, approximately two meters, in one of the walls of the Archaeological complex of Chan Chan, northwest of the Peruvian city of Trujillo, in the coastal region of freedom. The video is shared in a false Instagram account without previous photos, publications or friendships. But soon it is eliminated. The outrage is spread as a gunpowder: the largest citadel of mud in America has been attacked on Monday in broad daylight, without any security agent that could prevent it.
The Ministry of Culture, through the Decentralized Directorate of Culture, has reported that the effects occurred in “three walls of the archaeological walls of the northern annex of the Gran Chimú sector, inside the intangible polygon of the complex”. Chan Chan, the capital of the Chimú kingdom, a civilization that reached its peak in the fifteenth century, is composed of a dozen extended enclosures in an area of twenty square kilometers.
According to local media, the serious problem of Chan Chan is that surveillance is concentrated in the museum and tourist areas, neglecting other corners that border agricultural territories. “This act constitutes a serious lack of respect for our historical and cultural legacy, and represents an infraction to the norms that protect the archaeological heritage. In that sense, the corresponding investigations are being carried out to file the criminal complaint against those responsible,” the authorities have pointed out.
The police investigations preliminary has followed the user of the account that the attack shared, which responds to the name of Marcos Fernández. As they indicate, two minors and two adults of 28 and 30 years have identified in Trujillo through which they could unravel the case. The difficulty is that they lack security cameras in the sector where the attack against a World Heritage of Humanity for UNESCO, declared in 1986.
The rejection of citizenship has grown in the last hours upon learning of other graffiti. The Clean Trujillo digital channel has registered inscriptions such as “Sparta Force”, “Boris” and “M and M”, which may be the nicknames of the vandals. According to the Peruvian Criminal Code, those who threaten a cultural heritage can be sentenced to six years in prison and 365 days of fine. In case of inducing another person to commit this crime, the penalty would reach the eight years of deprivation of liberty.
It is not the first time that Chan Chan is attacked. Last April, land traffickers were intervened for opening a trail with heavy machinery in the Pampas sector of Father Abán, just 200 meters from the intangible area. The detainees then, identified as Erika Mabel Carrión Quevedo, Ángel Romero Agustín and Piero Antonio Ramos Polo, the materials and goods used for construction were seized, as well as a vehicle. In those days, a man and a couple committed the same crime.
In February, the stone of the twelve angles, an architectural jewel, located a few meters from the Plaza Mayor of Cusco, where before the Inca Roca Palace was, it was seriously affected by a man who hit the monument with a hammer repeatedly. As soon as the Chano Chan citadel has been arranged a restoration team to eliminate any trace of paint that compromises its integrity.
